URS is committed to contributing in a meaningful and positive way to the communities in which we live and operate. We define community in the broadest sense: the social, economic and environmental spheres in which we do business and live our lives. The resources we invest in our communities are consistent with our core values: integrity, professional excellence and environmental and social responsibility.
Community Support
We provide sponsorship through a range of resources including time and expertise to support not-for-profit organisations and community intiatives. We support the work of Water for Survival, an organisation dedicated to improving water quality, sanitation and hygiene in developing countries, which is now under the Oxfam umbrella. Each of our offices has supported specific charitable organisations and events in its locale.
Knowledge and Leadership
We recognise that developing a sustainable future requires knowledge sharing and building – and that this is true of both individuals, as well as companies. URS has continued to build on its involvement with a number of key leadership organisations including the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Business Network and Auckland Chamber of Commerce, as well as industry specific bodies such as the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), the Association of Engineering Consultants New Zealand (ACENZ), Environmental Institute of Australia and New Zealand and the New Zealand Society for Risk Management. URS provides support for learning institutions, specifically in relation to engineering and environmental faculties. Several of our staff also give lectures and seminars in their areas of expertise and we provide work and learning oppportunities for tertiary students during their summer breaks. Our involvement includes the annual sponsoring of a Best Paper Prize in Environmental Engineering at UNITEC and taking part in the Auckland Gifted Kids Programme initiative to assist primary school children to discover the opportunities and workings of a diverse range of businesses and careers.
People Participation
One of the distinctive features of the people who work at URS New Zealand is the level of enthusiasm and spirit which community, team and sporting events are embraced. We take part in a range of community events, many of which are in support of not-for-profit organisations, or promote the values and behaviours we support as individuals and an organisation. These include the annual Bike Wise Week, Clean Up New Zealand Campaign, and Round the Bays event in support of children’s charities.
Sustainability Reporting
We demonstrate our commitment to sustainable development in our own organisation, as well as in our work with Clients through the Triple Bottom Line reporting process. URS New Zealand produces an annual report measuring, monitoring and setting new goals for performance in economic, social and environmental arenas. The Sustainability Reports are available from the menu to the left
Our Sustainability Report is coordinated by a team of committed staff, led by our Senior Sustainability Consultant Kerry Griffiths. Kerry_Griffiths@urscorp.com
